What happens to us after death?

Heaven and Hell

Death is the moment that our body, due to different reasons like age, sickness or accidents departs from the soul. This is when the body will follow a path towards decay, while the soul will follow the path to his Creator, where he will be judged.

Heaven and Hell Icon

How do we receive the knowledge about death?

Through faith we receive the Revelation, and through Revelation we are able to discover the life beyond this one.

Activity after death

We witness everyday that life assumes movement and activity. This means that the life after death will also involve activity and movement. The one we live here on earth is often seen as just a simple reflection in the mirror of what the next life will be. The activity will actually be even more advanced, specially because we will be confronting the reality face to face.

In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, we can deduct from the conversation of the rich man with Abraham that the soul remains active with all his functions.

These are few of the moments that help us understand some of the functions of the soul after death.

 1. The rich man acknowledges and knows the reason he is in hell, which means that he has reason and judgement,

2. He feels pain and discomfort, which means he can feel

3. He can see and hear Abraham

4. He hopes for some alleviation, which shows the he has will

5. He remembers his brothers and family on earth, which means that he has memory

Time

The souls also have a conscience and a sense of time after departing from their bodies.

“And they cried with loud voice saying, How long o Lord, holy and true, until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on earth?”

“… they should rest a little longer …”  Revelation 6, 10-11

We can see in these verses that there is a perception of the time that passed and the waiting of the time to come.

The place

Divine Revelation didn’t share more with us about this aspect. The Holy Fathers advise us to look less where the exact location is and focus  more on doing good deets in oder to receive / gain Heaven.

The older theology is talking about Heaven and Hell as a spatial place. The righteous would enjoy happiness in Heaven while sinners would suffer in Hell, and between the two places it would be such an immense abyss that would never be crossed from one side to the other.

The newer theology added also that Heaven and Hell are also like an existential state.

St John of Damascus said that “The fire from Hell is the depravation of the material things that [sinners] would desire to satisfy themselves. On the other side, the righteous because they desire God, they receive Him as much as they want Him”

Saint Isaac of Syria was saying that sinners in the fires of Hell will be whipped by the flames of love. Those who realize that they have sinned against Love, they will suffer more than any suffering done by the darkest and scariest tortures. Because love works in two ways. It becomes happiness for those who receive it and pain for those who are rejected.

This being said we can understand that the souls will suffer in Hell as a result of their incapacity of directing their desire towards communion with God, and they are left in the pain caused by the depravation of the material goods that they were bound during their life on earth, and also the absence of love.

Those who lived in communion with Christ here on earth, in Heaven the communication with Christ will increase and will be closer as well.

What happens in Heaven

Heaven is the place and state in which the righteous find themselves after their personal judgement.

Heaven is known by many different names: Kingdom of Heaven, Kingdom of God, The house of the Heavenly Father, Life with Jesus Christ, the happiness of the Lord.

These are some of the things that are being shared with us in Revelation that happen in Heaven.

  1. The righteous are free from any kind of problems, pain or sufferings. They live in a continuous state of full happiness with no desire that is not satisfied or changed in time. They celebrate at a never-ending feast.
  2. In Heaven the righteous will receive some spiritual gifts that don’t have an analogy in the world. Just as St Apostle Paul said: “But as it’s written: Eye has not seen, nor ear has heard, nor have entered the heart of man the things that God has prepared for those who love Him”
  3. The soul in Heaven is in communion with Christ the Saviour, with the angels and the saints. The soul will keep his human aspect as a social being and happiness would not be attainable in isolation, but only in a communion where love, justice, peace reigns.
  4. Those in Heaven see God. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” Matthew 5,8
Some church writers used to say that a created spirit cannot see an uncreated one. This observation wasn’t necessarily wrong, if you only look at it from the capacities of a created soul. What we also know is that with the help of Grace that the soul can receive, he can rise to a supra-natural state, and then he would rejoice in being able to see God.
  5. The righteous in Heaven will not all be in the same state, because everyone will receive their reward in accordance with how much they strived and worked on this earth to be closer to God.
“In My Father’s house there are many mansions” John 14,2
St Basil the Great said “Because the Heavenly Father has many mansions, some will rest in a higher and more perfect state, and others on a lower state, but all will be honoured with the Peacefulness”

What happens in Hell

Hell is the state and place where the souls of sinners go after their personal judgment and where the evil spirits are.

Dostoyevsky described it in Brothers Karamazov as: “The pain of not being able to love anymore”.

Just like Heaven, Hell is a place and a state, not of joy but of pain. Also here, souls are not omnipresent either and that means they are bound to one specific place.

By saying that Hell is a place, that doesn’t mean we can specify precisely where it is. St John Chrysostom said “ do not try to find where Hell is, but try to stay away from it.”

The existence of Hell can be justified from a rational point of view. It is logical that if someone has the freedom and does something bad, then it should be punished. This means that God must have these kind of sanctions as well. Many times bad actions on earth are not punished, which means that in order to keep this balance, those will be receiving their punishment in the next life.

God created the world in such a way that virtues will be rewarded, and sins will be punished. Also because of God’s holiness, He would not let virtues to be treated the same way as sins.

What are the punishments that will happen in Hell?

  1. Distancing from God is death.

Getting further and further from God means that you are moving away from His gifts. Without God’s gifts, there’s only pain left.

2. Lack of communion with the saints
As we saw earlier, people are made as social beings. Because of their relationship with God and the saints during their life, and their desire to not be connected with the holy ones, the souls of sinners will keep their state, without being able to change it, and in Hell they will live without any kind of communion with God or the saints.

3. The existence in the society of evil spirits.
Not being able to be in communion with the good, the souls in Hell are only interacting with demons who will only produce more pain and suffering to them.

4. Remorse
Sinners will forever be persecuted by remorse of not living a life following the will of God.

5. The fire and the darkness

The fire in Hell is not the same as the one on earth. Saint John Chrysostom painted a very vivid picture of this fire by saying: “ The fire here burns and it consumes, and then it becomes something else, while the fire in Hell burns for eternity and never stops.”

The purpose of Hell in not so God can see people in pain, but to keep them away from sin. If there would be no sin, there would be no Hell.

Hell ends up being after all a self inflicted punishment of rational beings by divorcing themselves more and more from God and His will. For the person who lives in communion with God, there is no more Hell.

So far we talked about the state of souls after personal judgement, one that souls undergo immediately after departure from the body.

The Universal judgement will be a little different, and we cannot tell from now what the final sentence of a soul is, because the acts that it did in this life are not the only ones weighed. One will also be judged by the effect that their doings had on those who came after them. These effects cannot be known right away, and that’s why they will be taking in consideration at the Universal Judgement

Through the grace of God the christian should not be afraid of death. The eschatological condition of the christian is represented in this world as of a pilgrim.

Unfortunately today, we often forget this truth, and the modern person keeps sinking more and more in this swamp full of sins. The illusion of an eternal livelihood on this earth takes over and with that the thought about death and the life after death is being buried by a hedonistic conception that everything is here right now.

Who is St John Chrysostom ?

SaintJohn Chrysostom

I guess that after that talk about the family life, kidnaping, stealing, being greedy for the Kingdom of Heaven, it would be quite appropriate to talk a little about St. John’s life so we can understand better who he was.

I also want to make it clear, that this will be brief view on his life (even thou it will feel like a long reading), and is not a personal research made from the original documents in greek and latin, but from more recent papers that were composed in a more accessible way to comprehend.

Saint John was born in Antiochia, but the exact year of his birth is a little uncertain. It is estimated that is sometime between 344 – 353 AD.

His dad’s name was Secundus, and he was a high official of the Roman Empire – Magister Militia Orientis. Unfortunately he died shortly after St. John was born.

His mother, Anthusa, was still very young when Secundus died, but despite that she declined the opportunity to remarry and live a secure life, and in exchange she sacrifice herself in order to facilitate a good education to her son.

St. John was a very calm and easy to raise kid. He received a good classical education just like the big greek and latin authors of the antiquity. His professor of rhetoric was the sophist Libanius, and in short time St. John became his best student.

When Libanius was asked who would he like to have as a successor, he answered that he wished it was John, only if the christians didn’t steal him from him.

St. John also studied the law, which proves to be of good use later in his life.

St. John had as a mentor the Armenian bishop Meletie, from whom will receive his baptism in 367-370. Shortly after St. John was appointed as a lector due to his intellectual qualities and his spiritual honesty.

During that time he discovered the asceticism and started immediately to practice it. In the beginning he only practiced it at home, in the company of his mother Anthusa.

When his mother died St John will go in the mountains of Antiochia where he will experience more of the asceticism. Here, the first four years he spent under the guidance of an old spiritually advanced hermit. After the first four years he went for another two years to live in a cave alone.

The harsh conditions, the cold and the poor food will affect his health in a irreparable way, but at the same time the spiritual gains and growth helped him ignore all these challenges. Here he managed to get very close to God, and this for sure marked him for the rest of his life.

When he returned to Antiochia in 380 he will accepts the path that he has to walk on, the priesthood. Therefore In 381 the bishop Meletie  will ordain him as a deacon and in 386 he will receive the priesthood from the bishop Flavius.

During the diaconate he wrote many papers about asceticism and virginity.

When he was ordain as a priest his focused changed on preaching and telling his homilies in the church. During Lent he was preaching almost every day,  while during the rest of the year he would share his homilies each Sunday.

From 386 until 397 he had a very productive mission as an orator. His activity was mainly focused in the church of Antiochia. This is the time that he gained his name as Chrysostom ( Golden – Mouth), because of how much he impressed his listeners with his homilies.

I found it interesting and I want to mention an event that happened, called the “Statues Incident”. On this incident, St. John put a lot of effort to encourage and open the eyes of the antiochians to understand the mistakes that they have committed.

The statues incident is referring to the angry reaction of the antiochians at the abuse that was taking place regarding the tax collection. Because of this they started to act vengeful and take down all the statues. Back in those times, the consequence for such a crime was going to be quite terrible for the antiochians. The emperor, Theodosius, wasn’t planning on letting this event pass unpunished.

After the incident St John was trying to make the people understand the mistakes that they made, and as it happens this was happening during the Lent. St John took the opportunity to comment on the unfortunate events by implementing his message in all his homilies during the Lent. It ended up having 21 homilies that were speaking about this problems of the statues, which later was called “The homilies about statues”. His message was very strong and did amazing miracles in reforming and guiding the souls of the people. His last homily about the statues also coincided with the good news that the bishop Flavian brought the the Antiochian people. His mission to ask for mercy from the emperor was successful. There’s also a rumour that the letter of apology for the emperor Theodosius was actually composed by St. John. When the emperor heard the message of the letter he was so moved that he end up crying.

After this St John’s homilies changed a little in the tone they were composed. He started to be a little more warm and more free in sharing his thoughts.

He was easily combining dogmatical subjects with moral ones. The approach was familiar and was reaching easy in the hearts of the people. His message now was less focused on combating the heresies of the time, but more on books of the Bible. He started to write more and more commentaries and homilies about the chapters in the Holy Scripture. These were now what he was addressing to his followers.

In 398, St John is being elected bishop of Constantinople. This didn’t necessarily came as good news to St John, and that’s because of few different reasons.

First of all he didn’t like the idea of how much more pressure and responsibility this position will come with. The other reason that made him upset is that he knew that Eutropius, a very influential person in those times had a saying in his nomination as a bishop of Constantinople. Another hardship about this news, was that he had to leave behind all his faithful followers from Antiochia, which were very attached to him.

Despite all this he was called to be bishop of Constantinople just as it was planed, and his blessing as Episcopus Constantinopolitanus happened on 26 February 398.

Immediately after he received this position, St John started to shift things around and cancel any rules or laws that would be used in an abusive way. Another quick change that he implemented was the suppression of any form of luxury inside the episcopate, and denied the clerics to raise any more money that would be for their own benefit.

He also implemented a rule that the deaconesses will be separated from the clerics and will have different residences. This was a preemptive decision in order to avoid any cohabitation.

St John also reorganized the ecclesiastical goods, he made the charities, helping the poor, the hospitals and shelters for the elders a priority. Another rule, that got some really negative feedback in his near future, was on the behaviour and morality of the widows.

Regarding the catechetical work he continued writing homilies on St Paul’s epistles, he also wrote commentaries for the Psalms, and for the Acts of the Apostles. The quality of his writings and homilies suffered a little if it is to compare them with the ones he wrote in Antiochia, but fire and passion in the message didn’t diminish.

His missionary work in Constantinople was quite successful, making it possible for a successful conversion to Christianity of the Goths. He also sent very well prepared missionaries in Persia, Phenicia and in Scythia.

During his years as a bishop in Constantinople he had a very productive activity, but this didn’t happen without creating some enemies, especially those who were affected by his homilies and his clerical rules.

In 403 the first plot against St John starts and a secret and illegal council is formed with the purpose to take him down from the position of bishop. All those who participated in this illegal council were supported by the empress Eudoxia, who was felling unhappy with the homilies that were addressing the behaviour of widows.

St John, accepted the decision that was taken at this council and left his position as bishop, but very shortly after that the empress had to call him back because of all the revolts that the people started due to his leave, and also a huge earthquake that shook very powerfully the entire land. After he was brought back to his position as a bishop, the crowds were happy again.

Unfortunately, only two months later the problems start again. This time the plot was even worse. The ones who wanted St John removed wrote a false homily using his name. This homily was attacking the empress directly by comparing her with Herodias from the times of St John the Baptist. This made the empress angry and wanted to get rid of St John Chrysostom as soon as possible. She worked together with the plotters and they used the fact that upon St John’s return on as a bishop there wasn’t an actual council that would revoke the previous one (even though it was non canonical). This way they managed to make his return and reinstallation as a bishop non canonical.

They decided then to remove him under this claim from the position as a bishop. This time St John refuses to step down because he doesn’t want to leave back anymore his faithful followers. Because of this he will be arrested and sent in exile on June 20th 404.

This exile wasn’t very easy for St John. We find details about the harsh conditions from the correspondences with his friends from Antiochia. He mentioned in his letters how the sufferings are like sanctifying virtues.

Meanwhile his followers and supporters in Constantinople were doing everything they could in order to bring back their bishop. These movements even got so far that they set fire to the cathedral St Sophia. Because of all these events, and because the people started to travel and visit St John more and more in his exile, the enemies of the Saint decided to move him even further away in his exile.

On the road to Pityus, the new exile location, St John will die being too tired and sick from all the hardships. St John died while he was saying these words: “Glory to God in all the things”.

In 438 the body of St John was brought back in Constantinople.

St John was a short man, quiet, a pleasant face, a wrinkled forehead, vivid eyes and a deep look. He was happy, warm and kind with the people he knew, but reserved and a bit cold with strangers. He had an impressive intelligence, that was combined with his originality in creating an incomparable theological dialog. This made him be one of the most valuable preachers in the history. His greatest work was indeed the guidance of the souls.

An important mentioning point is that St. John was also the one who compose the Holy Liturgy that we celebrate the most during the entire year.

How to overcome the obstacles in the family life

I recently found in an older book from my library interestingly placed the homily of St John Chrysostom at the second book of Timothy as an example and guide on “How to overcome the obstacles in the family life”

After reading the chapter for the first time I got a little confused because I couldn’t easily see the correlation between the family life problems and the message in the text.

That made me go first to the original text of the Holy Scripture and read The Second Book of Timothy. Again here I couldn’t find an explanation why would this text would be connected to the family life and how it would be used as guidance.

Next step was to go ahead and read St. John’s homily. The homily number 9 for The Second Book of Timothy. Here again I failed to see the direct resemblance with the family problems. After all, this Second Book of Timothy is a book that guides in overcoming the hardships in the ministry not in the family.

I had to step back and take a break because things didn’t make sense.

Why did the author who put this chapter together picked this homily as a guidance in overcoming the obstacles in the family.

Lets look together at the points that I encountered in this chapter.

  1. The relationship of a servant with his master and how putting the needs of the master above anything of your own and your own needs is so important, and also very rewarding.
  2. Disliking your own and of all of the worldly things and choosing those that are of the master will gain you bigger treasure of the spiritual kind and of course the Godly treasures.
  3. If the servant is able to do achieve so much imagine how much more can the Master do and achieve.
  4. That who leaves serving the master for the riches, to gather for himself, stealing and hurting those of the master’s he will soon be lost and he will also lose his possessions. Here the author also mentions leaving the sorbing of the master even for raising his children and taking care of his wife, will lead towards the same consequences.
  5. The advice to despise those that are ours. Here the things become a little more clear and I can manage to understand better what is called “ours”.  Ours is referring to this world, all of it from the sky and everything on earth. If we despise them we will receive them back from God, but not only those., because these are also for the ones who don’t believe and are unworthy. What’ s more it’s the Kingdom and the glory, those are to be gained.
  6. Making the wrong choices. We are so stubborn in our ways that we keep choosing the wrong things over and over again. The Heaven is being presented in front of us and we keep choosing to spin around in circles on this earth. The Kingdom of Heaven is in front of us, yet we choose the poverty of this world.
  7. Be rich! Be greedy and kidnap! Very strange statement from a christian point of view, for sure. Even more: You will be found guilty if you are not greedy, you will find condemnation if you don’t kidnap.
I do feel like I need to elaborate more at this point. Because the Kingdom of Heaven doesn’t shrink when you steal from it. When you kidnap the virtue, those of the body – the needs – shrink . On the other side if you try to kidnap/steal for your body (this world) the more the possessions will shrink. This basically means that the more you strive to have here on earth the more your needs will grow and your satisfaction will be further and further from being accomplished.
I really want to stay here for a moment and clarify why the author choose these words: kidnaping & stealing. This is because a thief and a kidnaper in order to be successful they have to be alert, watchful, they have to be armed and to have protection. That is the reason he is using these specific words. We need to stop sleeping and snoring all the day and night and we have to stop being naked, unprotected and unarmed. Living as a sinful person it is the same as being unarmed. We need to get dressed with light, gather weapons, spiritual weapons , be alert and watchful. Without these things we will be unable to kidnap the Kingdom of Heaven.
It is also useful to know that a thief or a kidnapper after they steal, they will start run-in fast in order not to be caught, in order to escape. Just like them we need to run, because the devil will run ahead of us and try to stop us and will make other to stop us, but if you are strong you will be faster than him and you will be able to kick away anything that is trying to catch you. Seeing that he will not be able to catch, eventually he will let you go, and you will be free like a bird, and you will be enjoying the unspoken goodness.
Interesting, for sure. This is not your usual simple comparison. This is definitely something that can scandalize a person if the reading is done without much care and attention.

With all this points in front of myself, I still had quite a hard time to understand how all this advice was related to the family life. For sure on this instance I had to resort to an abstract kind of thinking in order to connect theses two the problem and the solution in this homily of St John.

The way I finally managed to see this the proper way was to eliminate all the thinking about how to solve our daily problems as a family and just focus on “Kidnaping” the Kingdom of Heaven. That is for sure a long and elaborated work that if done together in a family the daily mundane things will slowly shrink and the beauty of Heaven would grow for both the husband and the wife and they would and they would not have to worry or fear anymore, because they will steal and kidnap together and run and be free together.
